English as a Second Language
We help people from the community on Monday nights at 7:30 become more fluent in English. Anyone is welcome, and volunteers only have to know how to speak English! Two guys from Frazer UMC in Montgomery lead the program and provide the curriculum, and we just help teach the students in small groups or one-on-one!
Advocacy
We do various things throughout the year to raise awareness about social issues. One of our biggest traditions is sleeping out on the quad for a few days, living as homeless people on the steps of Bibb Graves in order to raise awareness about homelessness in America. We also pass out fliers and ribbons in the Trojan Center raising awareness about other issues.
Mission Trips
We're in the midst of planning this year's big mission trip to Haiti, and we will also have weekend mission trips throughout the year. In years past, we went to Ocean Springs, MS to repair homes that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina. We have also stayed locally to rebuild roofs, and we built a home in Juarez, Mexico! As far as weekend trips, we hope to go to Auburn to help repair homes with Alabama Rural Ministries. This past spring we also went to a homeless shelter near Atlanta to cook/serve lunch with MUST Ministries, and there's really no telling what opportunities will come up as the school year progresses! Our biggest emphasis, however, is on day-to-day missions in our area!
Building Wheelchair Ramps
People in the community frequently call the Wesley when they're in need, and one thing we can do to help is build wheelchair ramps! When someone calls, we just pick a Saturday and get to work! If you don't know what to do with a hammer, there will always be someone there to show you the ropes, so please don't let inexperience keep you from helping! A lot of us are in the same boat! :)
Repairing Homes
We also have a lot of opportunities to help people who are in need of home repairs in Troy and Brundidge! Right now, we have five houses lined up to work on.
Nursing Home
We're really not sure what we're going to be doing this year, but it will most likely be something like visiting with the residents, playing BINGO, or giving simple manicures! If you want to be involved, have any preference as far as what we do, or have any ideas, please speak up! In the fall, we'll figure out good dates and times to go based on everyone's schedules!
Preparing Meals
If you like to cook, the Wesley is the place for you! We have a really nice kitchen and need volunteers to cook each week for Common Meal, our big supper on Thursday nights (there will be a sign-up sheet on Wilbur's office door). The kitchen's also always open if someone's at the Wesley, and you can cook anything you want for yourself or friends as long as you clean up afterward! We
are also looking into the possibility of helping with a meals-on-wheels program in Troy.
